Say Bye To Flat Hair, And Hi To Big Hair

Read Article →
I have very thin and straight hair. And that usually means that it lays flat on the scalp, and that, may not be the most attractive look especially with the ears peeking out ugh that drives me nuts.

Usually on the runway, there are tons of models with silky blonde hair that has perfect volume and texture. And although we may not be able to replicate the magic of the hands of hair stylists, we can still inject 'life' into our daily hairstyles by using drugstore hair products.

Below are three products designated to save flat, limp hair that I have tested out over the week.

Left - right : Lucidol Volume Airy Wax, Toni&Guy Sea Salt Texturizing Spray, Toni&Guy Volume Plumping Mousse

Lucidol Volume Airy Wax
This wax is awesome. The 'wax' has a soft, cream-like consistency and get tacky after rubbing between the fingers. It promises a strong hold (contains silica), is non-sticky and provides easy styling. It contains penetrating Hyaluronic Acid which is a moisturizing ingredient and has green floral scent.

Directions:
Spread small amount of wax onto fingertips and between fingers.
Style by lifting the sections where more volume is desired.
Replace cap after use.

Pros:
Inexpensive, a 20g mini container retails for only S$4.90 at Watsons and you get a ton of product.
Very easy application, hassle-free and great for on-the-go touch ups.
It gives great volume but leaves a sticky, rubbery grip feeling to the hair which is common for hair products containing silica.

Cons:
I encounter trouble capping the container at times.
Volume does not last all day, I find myself having to lift and scrunch hair from time to time.

I give Lucidol Volume Airy Wax lifting power a 4/5 stars!

Toni&Guy Sea Salt Texturizing Spray
We've heard our fair share of raves for sea salt sprays, it promises to give hair texture and body with light to medium hold achieving a lived in, beach look.

Directions:
Spritz evenly root to tip, on towel-dried or dry hair and work through to create tousled waves and natural movement.
For extra hold and texture, layer through dry hair and re-style with fingers.

Pros:
Does the job to achieving messy, tousled hair texture.
Fairly price, the 200ml bottle is priced at S$24.90 and the 75ml travel size bottle is around S$9.90 available at all Watsons and Guardian stores.
Has a nice fresh floral scent.

Cons:
If your hair is naturally straight, it may not create waves in the hair.
Does not provide much volume if you are looking to lift hair from roots.

Toni&Guy Volume Plumping Mousse
This product has mixed reviews online, T&G's website states that it is crafted with a root targeting nozzle to get body, bounce and movement where applied. Promises to add long-lasting body to limp hair without stickiness or build-up.

Directions:
Squeeze the desired amount into your hand and work through the length of the hair, combing through. Alternatively, spritz directly to the roots of  towel dried hair, section by section,  before heat styling. Spritz hair with heat  protecting mist before using mousse to protect  your hair against heat damage.

Pros:
The great thing is that all the product doesn't leave the hair greasy and volume lasts all day.Has a pleasant fresh after bath scent to it. .
Foam dispensed does not splatter or spill everywhere

Cons:
The residue from this product makes your hands very soapy. After massaging into the hair, I usually like to wash the excess product off my palms. Even with that, when I touch my hair in the middle of the day, some product adheres to my hand. And when my hand gets wet, it gets really soapy and annoying.

The lifting power is on the weaker side, so do not expect much volume using this product.
I usually use 1+  pump of foam, sometimes 2 pumps, I notice that if I use lesser product, I don't see any lifting effects. Add another volumnizing product to boost effectiveness. I highly recommend these 3 products combined together.

If these 3 products are still not able to satisfy your big hair needs, you can add Osis + DustIt Matifying Powder by Schwarzkopf into the regimen. This powder, when applied directly onto the roots, gives hair massive volume plus it absorbs oil making the scalp less greasy. Works great on second day hair as well.

Share with me your best volumnizing hair tips and tricks and I'll see you guys in my next post!

Love,
Hannah

Coping with stress

Read Article →

Hi guys, so today's topic is about stress. Life can be stressful, and sometimes things don't go your way. I had the worst past week in my entire life, I was so frustrated and stressed out, I could not control my temper and as if heaven has been playing a trick on my, that time-of-the-month came which worsen my stress level by tenfold. I was placed in situations where there is nothing I can do to make the condition better and all I want to do is to sit down and cry.

I am bad at stress. I become very irritable and cranky even though it has been much better these years. And I am absolutely sure I am not the only one who needs anger management. So I have come up with a few methods that I found useful to cope with stress.

1. The most effective method I have tried to instantly alleviate stress is to drink something sweet. Drink a can of sweet tea, coca cola, pepsi, fruit juice, whichever floats your boat. I feel that I immediately ease up and become more positive, less angry and I am able to think more clearly. Perhaps when I feel that everything is going the wrong way, the sweetness in drinks cheered me up a little bit.

2. Retail therapy. As cliche as it sounds, it works. And I don't mean retail therapy as window shopping, I mean you spend real money and buy pretty stuff. Materialistic it may seem, but the excitement of buying something you like, be it a necklace, a lipstick, a bag, even a $10 t-shirt(anything works) distract you from the problem and make you feel motivated to start another day to wear your purchase out. So second tip to cope with stress, spend money on yourself.

3. Sleep. Sleep away the problem. Sometimes it is the mind that gives you the stress. If you are like me and you spend the whole day thinking about the problem and get so depressed that it is disrupting normal daily activities, try sleeping without setting an alarm. Sleeping calms down your mind and you find temporary relieve even for a few hours, which I think helps a lot when you are depressed.

4. Change your appearance. Just had a bad breakup? Failed your exams? As if letting the past go and moving on with your brand new life, changing your appearance helps to cope with stress and anxiety. Do you have anything you always wanted to change? Maybe you should try out a lighter hair colour, go for a manicure to pamper yourself, change up your lip colour and wear a bright lipstick for the day. All these changes helps psychologically to break apart from your previous lifestyle and start afresh.

5. Think to yourself what you are grateful for in that moment and tell yourself  'it could have been worse'. For me, throughout the week I was grateful for my mother who stood by me during my tough times, tolerated me even when I raised my temper at her for no reason. My dad, who would call me during work because he was worried about me. And just think to yourself that the situation could be have been way worse, you could have lost everything but you didn't. At least there are still people that love you, and that is all that matters. And you will feel positive energy instantly.

That's all guys, my 5 tips and tricks to deal with stress. Let me know down in the comments section how you cope with stress, are you like me who needs to be distracted away from the problem, or are you one who eats the stress away. I'll see you in my next post! Stay composed and stress-free!

Hannah

How To Shorten Jewelry Chain

How To: Shorten Jewelry Chain

Hi guys! Today’s post will be a How-To post on shortening jewelry chain. I have really small wrists and most bracelets I buy are mostly too big for me. So in this post, I will be attempting to try and explain the process of shortening jewelry lengths.

*Disclaimer: I am not a professional at this but this is how I shorten my jewelry. Please handle your jewelry with care and do note that if you clamp too hard on the jewelry, it may leave scratches. You may wish to try the procedure on cheaper jewelry first.

Below are the items you will need:

     1. The pieces of jewelry you will be working on,
     2. Big pliers for clamping,
     3. Small pliers for twisting,
     4. Measuring tape/ ruler (optional)

I’m going to shorten my bracelet first. If anyone is curious, the Eiffel tower bracelet is from Mini-bits. So before any adjustments are made, the chain measures to around 7 inches

 .

.

Step 1: Notice the jump ring that connects the chain to the clasps? Google jump ring if you are unsure how it looks like. You will need to clamp down on one side of the jump ring and use small pliers to twist open the ring. I find that twisting outwards (away from your body) is easier to achieve with lesser strength.

Locate jump ring

 .

.
Step 2: You may want to remove the excess chain first before attaching the clasps back onto the chain but in this case, I am attaching it on to test the length. Again, using same method, clamp onto one side of the jump ring and use the small pliers to twist it back into place.

 .

.
Step 3: using the same method as you would with the jump rings, clamp on one side of the chain you wish to remove, and twist outwards to expand the linkage.

That is it! It’s done! The bracelet is now around 6.2 inches long.

 .

.

Now we are going to do the same for the necklace. Unlike bracelets, necklaces are a little trickier, and why so? Necklaces have to be the same length on both sides or else the necklace will turn out lopsided. The necklace below is from Nasty Gal.

Similarly, before any adjustments, one side measures to 12 inches

 .

.
Steps 1: Firstly, locate the jump ring, then using the same method again, clamp on one side and twist outwards, not much strength is required. In this case the jump ring locates before the lobster clasp.

 .

.

Step 2: Measure how many portions of the chain you wish to remove. In this case, I am removing 3 linkages. Remove the chain as per usual.

 .

.
Step 3: Insert the jump ring removed previously into the chain and clamp to close the openings. One side is now down.

 .

.
Step 4: Measure the chain making sure that the amount removed from one side should be the amount to be removed from the other side. Again locate the jump ring connecting the end of the necklace to the chain. Clamp and twist to remove the end of the necklace to the chain.

 .

.
Step 5: Remove the excess chain and connect back the end of the necklace to the chain. Clam on one side and twist back the jump ring to close using small pliers. The necklace is now complete! After removing the excess chains, it measures 10 inches now.

 .

.
  .

.
That's all guys! I hope this post can help people out there who wish to adjust the lengths of their jewelry but had no idea how to. The tools can be easily found at home, the bigger pliers is from my Dad and the smaller one is from my brother. I hope you guys find this beneficial even though my explanation may not be the best.

Now we do not need to worry about bracelets slipping off our wrists again! Hope to see you guys in my next posts! Cheers!

Love,
